As part of the Mississippi Sustainable Agriculture Network (MSAN) an exciting new organization already doing some great things around the state, the MS Mobile Farm on Wheels is ready to hit the road heading to a town near YOU!

In 2011,  a group of recent graduates from the Mississippi School of Math and Science got together with Daniel Doyle of the Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi to collaborate on an exciting new project right here Mississippi. They were able to convert a school bus to a model for alternative, renewable energy utilizing biodiesel and solar power and now hope to turn it into a sustainable “farm on wheels” – a rolling greenhouse, chicken coop and more that will serve as an educational outreach tool throughout Mississippi and the south. Other features include worm tea and compost bins, a rainwater catchment system that will be used to irrigate our plants now that the greenhouse roof is installed and a chicken coop will soon be on board! School children will benefit from the ability to see and experience models of sustainability, learn about growing/raising their own food and hopefully inspire the next generation to rethink their relationship with and obligation toward caring for our environment.

In July 0f 2011, the team took the bus on the road cross-country to test it out, raising both money and awareness and spreading the word about what renewable energy and sustainable agriculture before returning to Mississippi to continue its mission. The team was blogging during their trip and visiting schools and organizations along the way.

In the spring of 2013, the bus was donated by GGSIM to MSAN to continue its mission and reach children, communities, and individuals to promote a healthier, safer, and more sustainable future.

Please consider supporting this project and help us reach our goal by donating today! Contribute any amount, it all adds up! And if you are a school, organization or event that would like to see the bus visit your town, then Request A Visit or contact us at msmobilefarm@gmail.com!
