As part of the Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi (www.ggsim.org), an exciting new non-profit already doing some great things around the state, we will be working with a group of recent graduates of the Mississippi School of Math and Science on an exciting new project right here in Oxford, MS. We will be converting a school bus to biodiesel and then turning it into a sustainable “farm on wheels” – a rolling greenhouse, chicken coop and more that will serve as an educational outreach tool for Gaining Ground throughout Mississippi and the south. Other features include a solar array on the hood of the bus, worm tea and compost bins and a rainwater catchment system that will be used to irrigate our plants once the greenhouse roof is installed. School children will benefit from the ability to see and experience models of sustainability, learn about growing/raising their own food and hopefully inspire the next generation to rethink their relationship with and obligation toward caring for our environment.
The project has already begun, and it is our hope to get as much done as we can in the month of June. In July, the team will be taking the bus on the road cross-country to test it out and spread the word about what Gaining Ground is doing in our state before returning to Mississippi for the start of the 2011-2012 school year. They will be blogging during their trip and visiting schools and organizations along the way.
